Encouraging diversity

Support Associations

We have a number of associations within the force set up to look after the interests of employees from different backgrounds. These include:

SAWP - Staffordshire Association for Women in Policing
MCA – Multi Cultural Association
SPDSG - Staffordshire Police Disability Support Group
SPLGB - Staffordshire Police Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Group

Trade unions

Unison

Unison is the trade union of police staff working within Staffordshire Police. It represents members’ interests and negotiates their annual pay and conditions with the force. It is consulted in respect of force policy changes and issues regarding welfare. It also advises members on disciplinary and grievance issues.

Police Federation
The Police Federation is the closest that police officers get to a trade union. It represents all police officers below the rank of Superintendent. The federation was established to give police officers the chance to express their view on welfare and efficiency matters to the government and the Police Authority.

Under the Police Act 1919, police officers are not allowed to take strike action and are not allowed to be members of trade unions.
