Intergrated Competency Framework

The integrated competency framework is a tool which allows us to have a clearly defined process for the recruitment and development of our employees.

The framework incorporates three elements:
  • national occupational standards
  • review of professional development
  • national competency framework
The framework was introduced in 2001 and since then the process of defining roles, recruitment, promotion and performance management have been based on national standards.

Many of the competencies run through various roles within the force, such as, effective communication, team working and personal responsibility. These are graded based upon the seniority of the job.

This framework has given us the opportunity as a service to introduce processes which are common to each force and to make life easier for people transferring from one force to another.

This standardisation of training programmes, recruitment and promotion processes also supports our efforts to professionalise the service as a whole.
