OSPRE Support Once they have successfully completed their Initial Police Learning and Development Programme (IPLDP), officers have a number of career options open to them. They can continue in their role as a Constable, enjoying the rewards of protecting the communities we all serve. Alternatively officers may seek new challenges, either through specialisation or progression to more senior ranks.
Officers seeking promotion through the ranks of Sergeant to Inspector are supported through a national promotion system known as OSPRE (Objective Structured Performance Related Examination). To prepare candidates for the examination, the force provides development activities under simulated OSPRE conditions with an appropriate qualified external organisation.
High Potential Development Scheme The High Potential Development Scheme (HPDS) is a national programme designed to develop the future leaders of the police service. The scheme helps them build up the skills needed to be highly effective in middle management, command and leadership roles. Candidates for the HPDS are usually identified at the time of appointment, but those not invited to apply before they join will have opportunities to be considered for the scheme throughout their career.
Positive Action Leadership Programme (PALP) PALP is a national four-day development programme funded by the Home Office. The scheme encourages individuals from under-represented groups to stay in the police service and apply for progression when opportunities arise.
The programme is open to all female, gay, disabled, black and minority ethnic police officers and staff, people from faith groups and to those who feel they lack opportunities to achieve because of their age.
Corporate Leadership Development Programme (LDP) The LDP is an award-winning management and leadership programme designed to improve overall force performance through individual and team development.
The programme, delivered in conjunction with the Centre for Professional Management at Staffordshire University, provides a dual award for those successfully completing the programme. This is the Graduate Certificate in Management Studies and Certificate or Diploma in Management accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.
Though priority is given to those people requiring leadership development who are already in a supervisory or management role, officers who are working towards the OSPRE process may also be considered.
One-Day Professional Development Events The force provides a series of one-day events offering ‘bite-sized chunks’ of professional management development for those officers unable to take advantage of the LDP.
Core Leadership Development Programme The Core Leadership Development Programme (CLDP) is a national distance-learning programme to help develop officers in their current role or prepare them for their next role. The scheme can help officers either through specialisation or promotion. The programme can be completed using either written material or e-learning.
The force offers selected modules to improve leadership knowledge and performance, such as Inspectors’ statutory responsibilities. Details of modules on offer are advertised on the force intranet at the beginning of April each year. |
