As a police officer or PCSO you need to be of ‘good character’ – but what does that mean in practice? As a general rule police officers shouldn’t have a criminal record, so it’s important you don’t break the law.

We also take references back over a five year period which may mean we will ask your school about you. If you can show you had a good record there, it may help your application.

It’s also worth thinking about your appearance. If you’re thinking of having a tattoo do bear in mind that it shouldn’t be visible if you are wearing a uniform. Generally this would mean not on your hands or forearms, your face or neck. If you do decide to have a tattoo, even concealed ones should not be offensive - such as racist or sexist.

As an equal opportunities employer, Staffordshire Police promotes diversity and does not tolerate prejudice in any form. If you do have views of this kind then we are not the right employer for you.
