We aim to have a diverse workforce that represents the community we serve. Jobs Bulletin
Mention the police force and people automatically think of uniformed police officers. Behind the scenes there are all sorts of other jobs being done by people to support the work of the officers on the beat.

From people working in forensics examining scenes of crimes to Communications Officers and the more traditional administrative roles, the career development opportunities in the police force are endless.

For people who aren’t ready to commit to a career as a police officer there’s always the chance to volunteer to become a Special Constable. We’ll give you a uniform, full training and we’ll pay your travelling expenses in exchange for a commitment to work a minimum of 16 hours per month.

All job vacancies for police staff and officers are advertised in our weekly jobs bulletin. If you’d like to get an idea of the sort of jobs we have available click here.

The types of jobs we have available fall into the following categories:

Police Staff
People who work in police staff roles don’t have any of the powers that a police officer or a Special Constable would have but still play a vital role in supporting the work of the force. Some specialist roles, such as Scenes of Crimes Officers will require specific qualifications.

For administrative roles you will need to have a good standard of education and we will be looking for people who stand out from the crowd. See Preparing for the World of Work.

Police Community Support Officers
Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are important members of the police family, working in neighbourhood policing teams patrolling on foot, making people feel safer in their community. As a PCSO, you can make a real difference to the quality of life in local communities, offering public reassurance and increasing trust and confidence.

On any given day, you can be called upon to tackle issues such as anti-social behaviour, traffic problems, vandalism or suspicious activity. You will be solving problems, sorting out complaints and making sure people’s concerns are being heard.

Although PCSOs don’t have the same powers as police officers they are able to issue fixed penalty notices for minor offences and confiscate alcohol and tobacco.

As a PCSO your role will be primarily offering a highly visible patrol. You will need to be physically fit as there is a lot of walking involved and you will need to take a physical fitness test before you are accepted.

Police Constables

Although we don’t ask for any formal educational qualifications to be a police officer, you do have to be 18 years old before you can be appointed. You must be physically fit, of good character and must have good eyesight. You must also be a British citizen or a Commonwealth citizen whose stay in the UK is not subject to any restrictions or a member of the EC or other EEA country (Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein).

We check the criminal records of everyone who applies.

Special Constable
If you’re not sure that being a police officer is really the job for you then you might like to try becoming a Special Constable. Special Constables (known as ‘Specials’) are volunteers who give up their time to work alongside regular police officers. Specials provide a visible police presence in the community and would give you a good insight into what the job of a regular officer is like.

As a volunteer you won’t get paid a salary but we do give you full training, a uniform and we do pay expenses. To find out more about what being a Special involves click here
