Career Development

As a Special Constable you may work on a voluntary basis but that doesn't mean we don't offer you career development opportunities.  Your training is just as vital as that of police officers so ongoing operational training is provided.
The Special Constabulary has a rank structure similar to that of police officers:

Special Constables supplement the role of regular Police Constables.

The Special Constabulary Sergeant will work alongside divisional operational Sergeants and managers to lead and manage local Special Constabulary teams to support the provision of effective citizen focused divisional policing.
The Special Constabulary Sergeant will have responsibility for the day to day local management and implementation of the Force policy on the Special Constabulary, in particular the deployment of members of the Special Constabulary.
The Special Constabulary Sergeant is required to support the divisional Special Constabulary Inspector when necessary, and to participate in relevant local operational planning meetings and activities.

The Special Constabulary Inspector will work alongside divisional operational Inspectors and managers to lead and manage sub-divisional Special Constabulary teams to support the provision of effective citizen focused divisional policing.
The Special Constabulary Inspector will have responsibility, assisted by divisional Special Constabulary Sergeants, for planning and managing the local implementation of the Force Policy on the Special Constabulary, in particular the deployment of members of the Special Constabulary.
The Special Constabulary Inspector is required to support the divisional Special Constabulary Chief Inspector when necessary, and to participate in relevant local operational planning meetings and activities.

The Special Constabulary Chief Inspector will work alongside the Divisional Command Team to lead and manage the divisional Special Constabulary to support the provision of effective citizen focused divisional policing.
The Special Constabulary Chief Inspector will have responsibility, assisted by Divisional Special Constabulary Inspectors for planning and managing all aspects of implementation of the Force Policy on the Special Constabulary at a divisional level, in particular the deployment of members of the Special Constabulary.
The Special Constabulary Chief Inspector is required to support the Special Constabulary Chief Officer when necessary, and to participate in relevant divisional command team planning meetings and activities.

The Chief Officer is the most senior member of the Special Constabulary within Staffordshire and carries out an inspectorate/liaison role

In addition, it is acknowledged that a number of Special Constables go on to apply to become a regular police officer.  Experience gained as a Special Constable can assist you in deciding whether police work is for you as a full time role and, if so, you can draw upon those experiences when applying to join the regular police force.
