Selection process - what you can expect at each stage

Stage One - Paper sift
Your application form and supporting documentation will be paper sifted. If necessary, we will then contact your force to request any additional information which you have been unable to provide with your application.

Stage Two - Interview
The interview is competency-based and is designed to assess your skills and experience in accordance with the National Competency Framework behavioural areas for your generic role profile.

Stage Three - Current force requirements
Your existing force will be contacted in order to obtain copies of the following:

  • up-to-date sickness record
  • up-to-date training record
  • up-to-date details of any complaints made by members of the public or internal discipline investigations
  • salary and pensions information
Stage Four - Health checks
You will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire, an eyesight report form and a consent form.

Stage Five - Medical
The medical examination includes the following:
  • hearing test
  • lung function test
  • eyesight test
  • drug screening.
What happens if you are accepted?
The results of your medical examination can take a few days. We will notify you in writing once the results of your medical have been received. This will take up to 14 days.

Future appointments are determined by vacancies at the time.

All future appointments are dependent upon candidates remaining of good character and maintaining a satisfactory level of fitness.

Candidates may be required to undertake a fitness test.

Posting to a Neighbourhood Policing Unit
You will receive an offer of appointment letter six weeks prior to the commencement date. This letter will detail the division to which you have been posted.

The divisional human resources department will determine your actual place of work. Whilst consideration will be given to individual circumstances wherever possible, organisational need will take precedence.

You will not be required to travel more than 30 miles to your place of work. If you reside outside the force area you can be required to travel up to 30 miles from the point on the force boundary closest to your home. All travelling expenses to your appointed place of work are at your own expense.

Rent allowance
Transferees will retain rent/housing allowance as appropriate, if they were originally appointed to the police service before 1 September 1994. This will be paid at the Staffordshire Police’s rent/housing allowance rate applicable at the time of transfer.

Terms and conditions outlined are for information purposes only and may be subject to change at any time.
