Police Staff FAQs

1. Can I be a member of the British National Party (BNP) or similar organisation?

The police service has a policy of prohibiting any of their officers or police staff from becoming members of the British National Party (BNP) or similar organisation whose aims, objectives or pronouncements may contradict the duty to promote race equality.  If you are, or have been a member of the BNP or similar organisation your application may be rejected.

2. What do we look for at the interview?
Interviews are structured and competency based. You will need to demonstrate that you have the skills and abilities required for the role by way of giving examples of your previous experience. For example, if asked a question relating to decision making you could give specific details of how you have had to prioritise your work in your current role. All candidates are asked the same series of questions and you will be graded on your answer using a pre-set rating scale.
3. What hours will I be working?
The standard working week is 37 hours. Many posts allow flexible working. Some posts require you to work a shift, for which you will receive a shift allowance, depending on hours worked. We can offer job-share and part-time working.

4. Is there a period of probation?
Yes. All appointments are subject to a probationary period. This is usually six months from appointment.

5. Will you ask for references?
We will take up references to cover the five years prior to appointment. References will be sought regarding your attendance, work record, sickness and conduct.

6. How long does the recruitment process take?
This will be variable depending on the position applied for. As a general guideline most applications take three to four months from initial application to a start date being agreed. This takes into account the time required to complete vetting checks and health screening.

7. What happens if I am successful at interview?
You will receive a conditional offer letter which will be subject to satisfactory recruitment checks, vetting and medical clearance.

8. Will I be able to get feedback on how I performed at interview?

Yes, all candidates will receive a letter informing them of the outcome of their interview. Individual feedback will be available from a member of the interview panel.

9. If I am short-listed what happens next?
If you are short-listed you will receive a letter within eight weeks of the closing date, inviting you to the next stage. Dependent on the role applied for, the next stage may be an interview or may consist of an assessment process.
10. How do I make a successful application?
Any vacancies that you apply for with Staffordshire Police will identify the essential skills, experience and knowledge that you require in the role profile attached to the advert. The decision to invite you for interview is based on the information you provide on your application form. It is therefore very important you give good specific examples which evidence you have the skills and experience we are looking for.
